Compare Sizes

The same text shown at a range of common sizes. Points (pt) are the units used by word processors and printers; pixels (px) are used on screens.

How It Works

Enter your own text in the box at the top; a heading, a paragraph from a book, or anything you like. The large preview updates instantly as you move the slider or press the A− and A+ buttons, so you can settle on a size that feels comfortable to read at your normal viewing distance. The Compare Sizes list below then shows that same text at a ladder of common sizes at once, making it easy to see the jump from one size to the next.

Pixels, Points, and Print

Screens measure text in pixels (px), while word processors and printers usually measure it in points (pt). At the standard screen resolution of 96 dots per inch, 1 point equals about 1.333 pixels, so a size is shown in both units to bridge the two worlds. To judge a printed size, use the Print This Page button; the page prints the comparison ladder so you can hold it up and pick the size that reads best on paper.

Tips For Comfortable Reading

  • Body text is often comfortable between 16px and 20px on screens, and 11pt to 12pt in print.
  • Large print for easier reading typically starts around 18pt, which is close to 24px on screen.
  • Sit at your usual distance from the screen while testing; a size that looks fine up close may be too small from further away.
  • Try both a serif and a sans-serif font; some people find one noticeably easier to read than the other.
